If you are a fan of American history, you must plan vacations to Williamsburg, VA. In 1606, the very first British Colony was founded here, in Jamestown, which was 13 years before the Mayflower arrived in Plymouth. Just imagine the number of historical gems there are to be discovered here!
Discover it Yourself
Today, you can see a recreation of the first British colony at the Jamestown Settlement Colony, along with the recreation of a Powhatan Indian Village where you can get information on Pocahontas.
An interesting tidbit is that more than two million artifacts have been discovered from this colony from the efforts put in by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project. These can be viewed at the Archaerium which has many exhibits that depict the grim reality of the lives of early British settlers. If interested, you can go to Historic Jamestowne and see the efforts of archaeologists to discover more historical gems from the colony.
If you still aren’t sated with historical bits, you can visit the largest live museum in the world – Colonial Williamsburg. Here, you can step into the past and ‘meet’ people of the yesteryears and watch re-enactments of several historical moments, participate in activities, and check out historic buildings.
